What to do in Lipari and the Aeolian Islands

Among the many Italian landscape wonders, the pumice quarries of the splendid island of Lipari have a special place.

When we talk about pumice we refer to a pyroclastic magmatic rock. Its porosity makes it particularly light. It arises from explosive eruptions and with the creation of gas bubbles in the rock matrix it is characterized precisely by a high porosity.
It is the only stone that is characterized by the ability to float in water. Its color is usually clear, tending to gray, but depending on the composition of the rock it can also be white, green, black or cream. This particular stone is widely used in the cosmetic field and here it is referred to as pumice stone. Among its uses also that of industrial washing.

The pumice quarries are located in the northern part of Canneto where there is a spectacular white beach. It is quite crowded in August but it is not in spring and during the week... here where the sand is not sand and a huge and white dune is reflected in the sea.
